Call Sheet #145: Lessons From Occupy Movement, New Online Ticketing Options, Twitter's "End of Innocence"

Technology and its influences on the way people gather dominate our news roundup today. While these developments are newsworthy on their own, it's also interesting to think how the concepts here might morph and influence other events in the months to come. That idea was also a big part of the thinking behind our Best of 2011 package. We've started to post pieces from that online—an archive is here:

* INCOMING *

1. TECH LESSONS FROM OCCUPY MOVEMENT: Alexis Madrigal of The Atlantic looks at how technology has shaped the protests: "[A] set of mobile technologies that didn't exist ten years ago offered protesters new human capabilities that they used to record and disseminate information, as well as organize—or maybe more properly, design—the protests. These new behaviors, like blanket cell-phone photo coverage paired with social media amplification, were unprecedented in the United States, though activists put them to use in the Arab Spring protests."

On winning support from outsiders: "In addition to reading about them in the paper or on a blog or seeing them on TV, they saw tweets from people on the ground, photos posted to Facebook, and livestreamed video. All this happened in real-time, so new support could be rallied *during* events, not long after them."

On organization: "Internet technology, specifically, has created new habits of mind and expectations of large-scale projects. Whereas before, hierarchy would have been assumed in a national happening like Occupy, protesters could look to other models of organizing work. They could look to open source projects or, more simply, the insta-networks that spring up around metastatic information.

2. NEW ONLINE TICKETING OPTIONS: On Tuesday Chicago-based FanFueled launched an event ticketing and marketing platform that incentivizes, tracks, and rewards fan engagement. It encourages ticket buyers to share their plans on social media, and gives them rebates when their sharing results in additional ticket purchases across multiple degrees of separation.

Speaking of online ticketing: EventBrite has launched its signature app on a new platform Tuesday. TechCrunch: "The Android version of the Easy Entry app will seem very familiar for anyone who has used the iOS version before, but here’s a recap for everyone fortunate enough to have never worked at a check-in desk. Once the event is created in EventBrite, staff can log into the corresponding account and see a full list of attendees."

3. TWITTER'S "END OF INNOCENCE": Hollywood Reporter guest columnist and PR exec Brad Chase says Ashton Kutcher's decision to turn over his tweeting to his handlers at Katalyst Media is a bigger mistake than the uninformed tweet about Joe Paterno that sparked his decision: "Kutcher turning over the controls of his account officially marks the end of the innocence for Twitter and social media. The last few years have been a golden age for Hollywood in terms of bringing together stars and fans because of social media like Twitter. The iron-fisted grip reputation managers exert over celebrities, politicians and public figures has loosened so much almost overnight."

4. GOOGLE INVITE: USA Today: "Google on Wednesday is holding a Hollywood event where a splashy music store could rock the industry. In a wink to mock-documentary 'This Is Spinal Tap,' Google sent out invitations to a music event saying 'These Go to Eleven.'"
