April 16, 2015: Apple to Increase Conference Scholarships in Diversity Push, Unofficial Parties Boom at #NoChella, How Disneyland Will Celebrate Its 60th Anniversary

1. APPLE TO INCREASE CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS IN DIVERSITY PUSH: In an effort to increase diversity at its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced it would increase the scholarships it offers to attend the event to 350, up from 200. It also will work with more partners to identify applicants. TechCrunch: “With the new scholarships and partner STEM organizations involved, Apple is taking broad steps to make access to its event – and therefore its larger developer community and the potential for future success in the industry – something that reaches a more diverse crowd of young developers, including not only women, but also black and Latino groups as well.” http://tcrn.ch/1OBGIJy

2. UNOFFICIAL PARTIES BOOM AT #NOCHELLA: While tens of thousands of music fans were partying in the desert at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, a sizable number of partygoers and brands bypassed the grounds for unofficial events. The scene has grown to have its own name and even a hashtag. The New York Times: “Many would-be Coachella attendees are forgoing the concert for what’s become known as ‘No-Chella,’ hopping around to invite-only events featuring free food, alcohol, music and curated crowds that are preferable to the often young, drunk, pass-out-prone masses that throng music festivals. (The hashtag #NoChella2015 was a constant presence on Twitter last weekend.)” http://nyti.ms/1HwGL7x

3. HOW DISNEYLAND WILL CELEBRATE ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY: Disneyland Diamond Days, a celebration of the theme park’s 60th anniversary, kicks off May 22 with a 24-hour party and will continue with a sweepstakes that officials announced this week. Los Angeles Times: “The theme park has come up with novel prizes to be awarded daily and weekly, starting with 1- and 2-carat diamonds created for Disney. Some diamond prizes come with a stay in a suite inside the theme park. The Disneyland Dream Suite is above Pirates of the Caribbean and was created as an apartment for Walt Disney. Other prizes include a crystal Cinderella slipper with a diamond and topaz pendant, a private party in Fantasyland or a tailgate party in Cars Land, or an individual tour of Disneyland or California Adventure.” http://lat.ms/1HaFFOi

4. BRANDS USE TAX DAY FOR PROMOTIONAL EVENTS: Brands such as Hard Rock Cafe, Pizza Hut, and Office Depot are offering giveaways tied to the deadline for filing taxes. Mashable: “In recent years, tax day has emerged as a new fake holiday for brands in search of a marketing opportunity during the long secular gap between Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. The promotions this year range from food to retail — and many are particularly wacky.” http://on.mash.to/1J2GwPP
