The invitation for the American Craft Museum's Visionaries 2000 gala was a sure sign that the event would echo the museum's crafty approach. Legendary designer Massimo Vignelli (of Vignelli Associates) brought his simple, bold style to triangular invitations (echoing the V in the title of the event) with red and purple type on white paper (printed by Fred Weidner & Daughter Printers).
At the actual event at the Pierre, gracious hostess Barbara Tober, co-chairwoman of the gala and former editor of Bride's magazine, made sure each.phpect of the event had a crafty touch: handmade deserts by the Pierre's Michael Mignano, lavish flowers from Richard Salome Flowers and specially designed awards by artist Michele Oka Doner. Schuyler G. Chapin, commissioner of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, presented the awards to honorees including Julie Taymor and Martha Stewart.
The ballroom itself was outfitted with dramatic lighting by Frost Lighting and flawless audio/visual by King Cole Audio Visual Service. After dinner, Gerard Carelli Orchestra performed for guests and honorees, who also managed to keep with the theme by wearing clothes that could have been on display in the museum.
