Depending on how cautiously they comport themselves, some people may have been alarmed when they were served with subpoenas in plain manila envelopes earlier this month. But the ominous-looking documents were save-the-date cards for Justice magazine’s launch party at Plus. Some invitees also received desktop water coolers with the invitations that followed—a nod to the mag’s coverage of the sort of pop justice people talk about around water coolers in their offices. Silly stunts? Maybe—but they foreshadowed a party full of fun entertainment and decor ideas.
Along with copies of the magazine—think Us Weekly meets Court TV—toy handcuffs and foam gavels dotted bars and tabletops. (“The funniest thing was how fast 12 dozen pairs of handcuffs disappeared,” said Justice director of marketing and communications Rachel Pine. “We opened the doors at 7, and by 7:02 there wasn’t a pair to be found.”) Plus’ bartenders and servers wore police caps, and the DJ managed to work the theme from Cops into his rotation.
Liquor sponsors came up with themed cocktails like the “Perfect Alibi,” a Patron Silver margarita; the Intrigue “Crime of Passion” bellini; the “Smooth Criminal” cosmopolitan made with new-to-the-market Christiana vodka; and the “Miranda Warning,” “Hung Jury,” and “Plea Bargain,” made with flavored Bacardi rums.
Our favorite part of the party? Hot Shots Entertainment snapped mug shots of guests, and handed them coded “get out of jail free” cards to redeem for their pics—framed with the Justice logo and a celebrity mug shot from the magazine’s “Stars Behind Bars” story. “I thought people were going to be a bit camera-shy, but they were lining up for it,” Pine said.
