The East Inspires Warner's Grammy Party

Asian food, a Koi tank, and Japanimation-style cartoons filled the label's post-ceremony bash at the Pacific Design Center.

February 23, 2006
Guests of Warner Music Group's post-Grammy bash at the Pacific Design Center had big expectations to live up to: the party's invitation came in the form of a heavy wooden box with a foam cutout in the shape of a Grammy—to make it look like a packing case for the award—along with the instruction, "B.Y.O.G." (Celebrating its 67 nominations, Warner designed the invitations in house, and New York-based Graphology produced them—and with 20 wins at the show, we assume the handy storage cases were put to good use.) Warner's senior director of corporate communications Susan Mazo brought aboard Krislyn Meyer-Komarov and Lulu Powers to produce the far eastern-themed fete. The 1,500 guests (who included Paris Hilton, Courtney Love, and Grammy winning group Green Day) filled three distinctive spaces, all inspired by Asian influences. A tunnel lit in dark blue served as the entryway and spilled out into a section dubbed the Speed Racer room, a deep eggplant and turquoise-colored main party area based on the Japanese-inspired cartoon of the same name. Each table featured a flat panel TV screen showing vintage Speed Racer footage.

The guests who wanted to soak up a bit of the unusually warm February weather had plenty of options: there were two large tents set up outside. Bamboo and peacocks inspired one; it featured a dark blue, green, and brown color scheme and antique birdcages decorated with crystals and lights. The orange-hued Koi tent featured a large fish tank filled with the orange Koi fish. Jellyfish-inspired hanging crystal lanterns dominated the space.

The Asian-inspired menu included dishes in mini Chinese takeout cartons including sweet crab cakes with herb remoulade, tempura shrimp with wasabi glaze, spicy tuna tartare in sesame miso cones, and miso-glazed black cod with sticky rice on lettuce cups. There were also all-American choices like macaroni and cheese bites, miniature grilled cheese sandwiches, and miniature chicken pot pies.

DJ Kid Capri kept the crowd on its feet into the night with a mix of hip-hop, rock, and pop—most of it by Warner artists. Guests left with gift bags that included Hot Spot mini-donuts.

'Tap into travel,' Borunda advises of hosting inside an airplane hangar. 'Hosting an event at a hangar opens doors to many fun themes.
