Go Green: 9 Ideas for a Human-Powered Event

Jenny Berg
July 12, 2013

Each year, architecture firm Raw Designs hosts an industry event with a topical theme related to city building. This year's June 26 fete, held on the rooftop of a parking garage, was produced again by Kim Graham & Associates and celebrated human power. "While buildings and cranes seemingly build our urban landscape, we wanted to remind guests of the power people have in creating the ideas of shaping our future environments," said Raw director Ronald Rom Colthoff in a statement.

To bring the abstract theme to life, organizers designed an event that was human-powered. As triathletes furiously pedaled on generator bikes and ran on a human hamster wheel, they created energy that fueled custom light displays and DJ-driven beats. Some 1,400 guests looked on, helping themselves to chocolate drinks created with pedal-power machinery and ice pops that came from human-powered carts. Here's a look inside the sustainable, human-powered evening.

Teams of triathletes pedaled bike generators provided by Arizona-based ASE Power. The athletes' motion discharged electricity into the event's power grid.

The space featured snow-dusted trees, serene blue lighting inspired by the winter sky, and a color palette complemented by shimmering metallics that were designed to catch the light. The centerpiece of the festive gathering was the plaid dance floor and eye-catching ceiling installation, which mixed different mediums including winter greens, pine cones, starbursts, and more. Florals furthered the whimsical, wintry theme.
