Nature took on a new form—Halloween creatures, to be exact—on October 27 at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden's first-ever Halloween Bash. After walking through a dark entrance with only orange lights as a guide, costumed guests emerged to encounter palm frond ghosts hanging from the trees. The outside dining area had a variety of food options provided by Burdines-Macy's Catering, including pastas, shrimp, wings, and more. For liquid refreshment, Bacardi U.S.A. Inc. and Mahou sponsored two drink stations.
When it came to decor, Fairchild's event planner kept it natural. Centerpieces were made from sausage trees painted like ghosts, placed atop painted nests, and surrounded by painted wood chips. Near the dance area, bats hung from the ceilings and palm tree witches came out of the walls. The most eye-catching element was a cemetery scene that featured matured bamboo sheaths attached to bamboo poles to resemble ghosts, fishtail palms used to create witches, and the seedpod of a bottle palm tree making a cobra head. For V.I.P guests, tables draped in orange linens and decorated with candle centerpieces were set up inside a white tent removed from the rest of the event. This area also had benches arranged to create cozy conversation nooks, plus private drink and food stations inside.
A fortune teller and costume contest provided additional entertainment, and Bloomingdales sponsored V.I.P. gift bags.
