The Granite Club, a members-only club in Toronto's upscale North York neighbourhood, reopened its grand ballroom in March 2005. The 18,000-square-foot room, which had been closed for renovation, is available to nonmembers for corporate and private functions. A highlight of the space is the soaring 22-foot-high ceiling—it contains 40 lights that can be programmed to change colour. The room can seat 500 or accommodate 700 for a reception. The adjoining outdoor terrace has space for 200. A built-in LCD projector lowers from the ceiling for presentations, with audiovisual support from the venue's DVD players and more than 100 DMX stations. Executive chef Nigel Didcock oversees catering. There's also an on-site pastry shop, and underground parking and valet service are available.—Robyn Small
