More than 175,000 fans packed the Rexall Centre at York University over nine days for the Canada Masters tennis tournament. This year marked the 125th anniversary of the competition, known officially as the Rogers Cup. To celebrate the occasion, Terry MacDonnell, operations coordinator with Tennis Canada (the organizer of the tournament) worked with Mark McConnell, event organizer with title sponsor Rogers Communications, to create an upscale atmosphere in the various V.I.P. lounges. The 5,000-square-foot Rogers Cup player's lounge offered a private area for players, their guests, and guests of Rogers and presenting sponsor American Express. The elegant Southeast-Asia-inspired decor, from designer Jean-francois Grenier, president of Montreal's Altitude Concepts Design, included round, black-lacquered dining tables and matching high-backed chairs with red seats. The seats complemented red walls decorated with sconces and beech window treatments. Exquisite bird-of-paradise bouquets topped most horizontal surfaces, and original paintings on loan from sponsor The Art Gallery of Ontario contributed an additional touch of elegance to this upscale dining environment.
Two other V.I.P areas were located in a venue adjacent to the Rexall Centre. The ACES lounge, for front-row, platinum, and gold ticket holders, featured a casual-yet-upscale cafeteria and a large bar with yellow lighting from AVW Telav. The PricewaterhouseCoopers bistro, for premium ticket holders, offered formal dining with catering by Compass Group Canada. Guests ordered from a menu that included oven-roasted tomatoes, polenta, and Portobello mushrooms, and thyme and mustard grilled chicken. Dessert was a berry br?ul?e flan. The space also featured leather couches from Harvest House and a piano bar with a baby grand piano from Robert Lowrey's Piano Experts.
Samsung supplied the many televisions located throughout the V.I.P. spaces, while Westbury National Show Systems provided the sound system.
