1. MEDIA CREATING MORE EVENTS TO BOOST REVENUES, BRANDING: Media companies such as Huffington Post, Cosmopolitan, and The Wall Street Journal increasingly see conferences and events as key to their bottom lines and are creating new gatherings despite concerns over conflicts of interest. New York Times: “For the media companies, the benefits go beyond revenue. Live events promote their brand. They help companies give more prominence to valuable employees whom they want to reward. And interviews and panel discussions supply entertaining and cheap video content that can be used for other purposes and sold. In addition, conferences could generate news that would be covered by other organizations.” http://nyti.ms/190FLax
2. PETITION CALLS FOR END OF JAY Z AND BARNEYS PARTNERSHIP: After the department store was accused of racially profiling two shoppers, people are pressuring Jay Z to cancel his holiday sales partnership with Barneys and have criticized him for not speaking out. In a response on his Web site, though, the rap mogul said he was waiting for more information and defended the deal as providing proceeds for his foundation. Hollywood Reporter: "I have been working with my team ever since the situation was brought to my attention to get to the bottom of these incidents and at the same time find a solution that doesn't harm all those that stand to benefit from this collaboration." http://bit.ly/1c7VyE3
3. BRANDS TAKE NOTE: NEW RULES FOR PINTEREST CONTESTS: Planning a contest on Pinterest? The social media site is enforcing new rules to make it more difficult to launch certain types of promotions. AdWeek: “These updates come (probably not coincidentally) as Pinterest staffers have been in a lengthy email exchange with influential mom blogger Amy Lupold Bair, who had registered the trademark for the term "pinning party." When she attempted to enforce the trademark on other virtual party hosts, Pinterest's legal team told her to stop—and that her pinning parties for brand clients were in violation of their promotion guidelines anyway. But when Lupold Bair asked for specifics on how a Pinterest promotion could or should be run, it soon became clear that the guidelines are complicated, poorly communicated (by Pinterest's own admission) and currently being observed by almost no one.” http://bit.ly/1ajdTwS
