1. MAROON 5 WILL FOREGO SUPER BOWL PRESS CONFERENCE: The N.F.L. has announced Super Bowl halftime headliners Maroon 5 will not do a press conference ahead of the show, as past headliners have done. Instead, there will be a social media rollout of exclusive footage of the performers, including Travis Scott and Big Boi. Billboard: “While Maroon 5 did not give a reason for its decision, it comes as some entertainers have said social injustice needs to be addressed during the Super Bowl. That has led to some criticism of performers who are holding events in Atlanta. Jermaine Dupri said he was called a ‘sellout’ for hosting a Super Bowl-related event during a meeting with people who had lost family members as result of police brutality. UNDOCUMENTED WORKER FORMERLY EMPLOYED AT TRUMP GOLF CLUB TO ATTEND STATE OF THE UNION: Victorina Morales, an undocumented worker who worked for Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and left after she disclosed her immigration status, will attend the State of the Union on Tuesday. Morales, who was born in Guatemala, will attend as a guest of Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, a New Jersey Democrat. Washington Post: "The choice to invite Morales follows news stories about the Trump Organization’s failure to fully check the work status of all its employees, even as Trump described illegal immigration as a national crisis and demanded funding for a U.S.-Mexico border wall. The Washington Post reported Saturday that about a dozen undocumented workers were fired this month from the Trump National Golf Club in Westchester County, New York. Eric Trump said Tuesday that the company will implement E-Verify, a federal program that vets workers’ immigration status, across all of its properties. Lawmakers—and presidents—often seek to make a statement with the guests they invite to the State of the Union. 3. WHY SKITTLES IS HOLDING A BROADWAY MUSICAL FOR THE SUPER BOWL: This year, instead of airing an ad during the Super Bowl on Sunday, Skittles will hold a live Broadway musical. Right before the game, the candy brand will present Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical, starring Dexter's Michael C. Hall. The half-hour show won't be broadcast, but will be performed for a paying audience of 1,500 at the Town Hall in New York. The musical will feature songs by Drew Gasparini and a book by the playwright Will Eno and copywriter Nathaniel Lawlor. The New York Times: "It is weird. Deliberately. Two years ago, Mars, the parent company of Skittles, came to the advertising agency DDB Worldwide and explained that while a Super Bowl ad is of course prestigious, it doesn’t do much for candy sales. As Ari Weiss, DDB’s North American chief American creative officer explained after the rehearsal, people buy snacks for Super Bowl parties in the days leading up to the game, not during it. Mars challenged the agency to invent an ad that would create a conversation before the game. ... ATLANTA: Carolina Panthers quarterback and Atlanta native Cam Newton will have the grand opening events for Fellaship, his restaurant and cigar bar in Castleberry Hill, Friday through Sunday to coincide with Super Bowl LIII. The events will be co-produced by Vince Thompson of MELT and Tony Conway of Legendary Events. Fellaship will officially open in March.
