* INCOMING *
1. RADIOHEAD STAGE COLLAPSE: An investigation into what caused the stage at a Radiohead concert in Toronto that killed the band's drum technician and injured three others. The sold-out show was supposed to attract 40,000 fans, but the collapse happened hours before the show. Associated Press: "Officials from the Ontario Ministry of Labor searched through the wreckage for clues to the cause of the collapse Saturday in Downsview Park. They were also investigating whether safety regulations and standards were followed and if staff were properly trained. Ministry spokesman Matt Blajer said the massive structure is 'still fairly unstable' and work is under way to make it safe. He said the investigation is 'fairly complex' and it could take some time to figure out exactly what happened." http://nyp.st/LVosuU
2. NO MORE BIG SHOWS FOR BOSTON? The city needs to make major changes—including building more hotels and expanding convention space—to keep attracting big conventions like the weekend's BIO event. Boston Globe: "Pure and simple, Boston does not have enough hotel rooms—especially within walking distance of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center—to satisfy the growing demands of major conventions. The BCEC also does not have enough exhibit space or function rooms for many large shows. BIO will use the BCEC, the Hynes Convention Center, and several other venues across the city to 'fit' in Boston. Aside from the drawbacks of not having its event in one venue, BIO will pay more than $1 million to bus attendees to and from hotel rooms and venues scattered wide across the city and region. This does not happen in the other cities that are competing with Boston for BIO and many other conventions that deliver needed economic impact and economic development opportunities." http://bo.st/MILqmi
3. MARKETING DATA MINE: Acxiom Corporation, "the quiet giant of a multibillion-dollar industry known as database marketing" counts among its customers Macy's, Toyota, For, and Wells Fargo, with sales of $1.13 billion last fiscal year. New York Times: "In a fast-changing digital economy, Acxiom is developing even more advanced techniques to mine and refine data. It has recruited talent from Microsoft, Google, Amazon.com and Myspace and is using a powerful, multiplatform approach to predicting consumer behavior that could raise its standing among investors and clients." http://nyti.ms/KbtksM
4. SCOUTING HOLLYWOOD: More than 180 exhibitors attended the annual Locations Show organized in Southern California by the Association of Film Commissioners International this weekend at the L.A. Convention Center. The Hollywood Reporter: "Last year, the Locations Show was incorporated into the Produced by Conference, but this year it stood on its own, as it has for most of its two-decade run. There was strong attendance on Friday and somewhat less of a crowd on Saturday. Mary Nelson, communications manager for the Virginia Film Office and president of the AFCI, said her organization is seeing more people. And more importantly, the people who are coming are the industry's influential decisionmakers." http://bit.ly/PaKdrC
5. ART IN TIMES SQUARE: A Web contest to have an artist's work displayed on a 23-story Times Square billboard drew 35,000 entries, and the winner will be unveiled at an event today. The New York Times: "ArtistsWanted.org is not a charity but a business, one that hopes to make a profit identifying artistic talent and connecting it to an audience. Investors are pouring millions into it and similar start-ups and social networks like Behance.net and EveryArt.com, which cater to the growing cadre of people who consider themselves creative and think there’s a market for their work outside the network of galleries and dealers who dominate the commerce in art and design." http://nyti.ms/Mjde2z
