April 25, 2013: Should Boston's Big Events Go On as Planned?, New Niche for Meeting Space, World's Largest Indoor Ice Rink

1. SHOULD BOSTON'S EVENTS GO ON AS PLANNED?: Boston event planners have been grappling with whether to continue with their galas and glitzy corporate events in the wake of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. Boston Globe: "Across the city, organizations and party planners were forced to wrestle with the question of what to do with their lighthearted and celebratory affairs while memorial services were taking place across the region. … Party planners and board members of some of the city’s largest arts organizations are still grappling with the question more than a week after the tragedy, and the decisions haven’t been easy—or cheap." http://b.globe.com/11DG4U0

2. NEW NICHE FOR MEETING SPACE: Event planning firm Convene is filling a niche for local companies who seek stylish meeting venues by buying and renovating old office space. New York Times: "In contrast to the often-banal hotel ballrooms that have been the industry’s bread and butter for decades, Convene’s facilities seem strikingly different. In the kitchen, a display case marked “Nourish” offers copies of Wallpaper magazine and blue potato chips. Stools tuck under skinny counters embedded with electrical sockets. Panels of opaque painted glass, gray fabric, and wood line halls throughout." http://nyti.ms/17WrJTu

3. WORLD'S LARGEST INDOOR ICE RINK PLANNED: New York's vacant Kingsbury Armory in the Bronx will be turned into the world's largest indoor ice rink, city leaders have announced. When the $275 million facility is finished in 2019, it will have nine regulation-size rinks, the largest with seating for 5,000 spectators. Former New York Rangers captain Mark Messier and Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes attended the announcement Tuesday. AM New York: http://bit.ly/14bywft
