VENUE OWNERS DEFEND RIGHT TO BAN GAY MARRIAGES: After denying a gay couple who wanted to get married at the venue, an Iowa couple is suing the Iowa Civil Rights Commission, saying they feel pressure to host same-sex marriages despite their religious beliefs. Quad City Times: "Lee Stafford and his partner, Jared, filed a complaint with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and claimed the business could not discriminate based on religion because the former church is a public venue. The Görtz Haus serves as a gallery, bistro and private event venue. [Owner] Betty Odgaard said her business has suffered from a boycott following the denial, and she and her husband received threatening email messages, Internet postings and phone calls. 3. MICHELLE OBAMA CANCELS APPEARANCES AT CALIFORNIA FUND-RAISERS: The first lady has dropped out of two mega fund-raisers for the Democratic National Committee with tickets of as much as $32,000 a head, declining to travel during the government shutdown. Hollywood Reporter: "The shutdown now has put the whole affair on a back-burner, as even privately financed travel is a non-starter for the first family." http://bit.ly/17kJY3Q

The Faneuil Hall Marketplace Street Performers Fall Festival takes place this weekend. The event will include live music and restaurant specials.  

CHICAGO:  Homestead on the Roof will remain open year-round. The venue seats about 60 inside and has an 85-seat patio. When the weather turns cold, the patio space will be used for hot drinks, and servers will dole out blankets; there's also a fireplace outside.

LAS VEGAS:  Caesars Entertainment has deployed Passkey’s GroupMAX hotel booking technology at all of its Las Vegas hotels.

LOS ANGELES:  Fig & Olive is gearing up for the opening of its flagship Orange County location at Fashion Island in December. The 12,000-square-foot, 330-seat venue consists of six individual spaces.

Taste of L.A., presented by NBC4 Southern Calfiornia, is slated to take place for the second time during the 30th running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, November 1-2 at Santa Anita Park.

Gala co-chairwomen Wallis Annenberg and Jamie Tisch and honorary co-chairmen Brad Pitt and Robert Redford will host the opening night gala of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on October 17 to celebrate the center’s opening after 10 years of construction.

Eater: "The Brooklyn Night Bazaar, which started off as a four-night food, shopping and music festival at Dekalb Market two years ago, is about to take up permanent residence at a warehouse in Greenpoint. ORLANDO:  The Orlando Extreme Watersports Fest will take place October 19 at Lake Ivanhoe.

PARIS:  Associated Press: "Paris has won the bid to host the 2018 Gay Games, the lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender community's answer to the Olympics.
