1. HILLARY CLINTON’S ELECTION-NIGHT EVENT ENDS IN SOMBER MOOD: Hillary Clinton’s election-night party at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York ended in a somber mood, as the Democratic nominee conceded defeat to Donald Trump. The Guardian: “The Jacob K Javits Convention Center, the imposing glass structure named for a long-serving liberal Republican senator, had been selected as a fitting election-night venue for a candidate who eight years ago, after her defeat by Barack Obama in the Democratic primary, assured a crowd of tearful female supporters that they had helped place 18 million cracks in the ‘the highest, hardest glass ceiling’. On election night, a halo of high-powered lights gave the building an ethereal glow. The lights also illuminated thousands outside, unable to gain access, some of them clutching tickets. The New York police made 11th Avenue an impromptu holding area. Burger vans did a thriving trade on a fresh fall evening by the Hudson. Inside, Clinton was supposed to speak on a stage constructed in the shape of the United States, her podium positioned somewhere over Texas, a deep red state that would stay that way despite a nationwide increase in the Hispanic vote that had fuelled hopes of turning it purple, if not Democratic blue. American flags lined the stage. The pledge of allegiance was said, the national anthem played. … Whenever a network panned to the Javits, the glum crowd roared to life, cheering and applauding, seeking to send out a signal that they still had hope. The nominee was watching the results from the Peninsula hotel in midtown Manhattan, having voted earlier in the day with her husband, former president Bill Clinton, near their home in Chappaqua, New York. In the early hours of the morning, not long before the race was called and Clinton conceded, campaign chairman John Podesta took the stage to ask supporters if they could hang a little while longer. Supporters made a teary exit. Mothers carried weary daughters out of the glass structure that in the end hosted shattered hopes, not broken barriers.” http://bit.ly/2feD7Ie
2. TRUMP VICTORY PARTY INCLUDES A CAKE VERSION OF HIS FACE: One of the most talked-about elements of Donald Trump’s election-night victory party on Tuesday was a cake resembling Trump’s face. The cake, which was baked by Melissa Alt, went viral Tuesday as it presented a sad version of the newly elected president’s likeness. Yahoo: “Alt’s baked version of Trump, with an impressively jowly scowl, blew up on social media when she brought it to his Manhattan skyscraper, Trump Tower, earlier on Tuesday. She subsequently took the confection to Trump’s election night event at the New York Hilton. Both Alt and the cake were swarmed by reporters, campaign staffers, and even a Secret Service agent who snapped pictures and peppered her with questions. Alt said she spent 50 hours making the cake and used 12 eggs. She estimated that it could feed ’75 to 100 people.’ The head was sculpted with foil and chocolate frosting. Alt used photos of Trump as a guide. Yahoo News asked Alt if she thought the cake ‘looks a little angry.’ She also sculpted a cake likeness of Trump’s opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton, for a private event. Alt said that inspired her to make a Trump cake, and she contacted the campaign to let them know. Though Alt and her cake were invited to the party, she isn’t sure Trump has seen her work yet. Alt and her three companions were wearing media passes that allowed them to attend the party. As the crowd swarmed around Alt, a campaign staffer approached, to inform everyone that the media must return to the fenced-in press area. Alt and her team asked if they could stay in the hall where guests were filing in.” https://yhoo.it/2fDy417
3. EMPIRE STATE BUILDING FEATURES ELECTION TRACKER PROJECTION: CNN lit up the Empire State Building with election results on Tuesday night. Washington Post: “The display, produced by Obscura Digital, is a collaboration by CNN, Instagram, CA Technologies and the skyscraper’s management. It’s one part news-delivering tool, and one part crowd-sourced art project: A countdown clock will mark when polls close across the country, and massive charts will track the candidates’ progress as they compete for the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. ‘We are using those images, the faces of the supporters of each candidate, to create these projections,’ said Ed O’Keefe, a senior vice president at CNN. Since September, CNN has documented voters as part of its #MyVote social media tour. The election night display is the tour’s grand finale. ‘We wanted to break the fourth wall,’ O’Keefe said. ‘We wanted to make a connection between the television program, which is very much speaking at people, and this election, which has fostered so many emotions and conversations among people.’ … This isn’t the first time that the Empire State Building has put on an election-themed show. On Election Day 2012, the top of the building was bathed in blue light when CNN called the race for President Obama. The skyscraper has become well known for its elaborate light displays; last year, filmmakers projected massive portraits and moving images of endangered species on the building to promote the documentary ‘Racing Extinction.’” http://wapo.st/2fYG2WX
