1. EVENT PLANNER INCOMES: How much do event planners earn? An infographic based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows their median incomes for several cities the United States. Liz King Events: "The satisfaction of throwing a successful event may be priceless, but the services of an event planner are most certainly not. 2. HOLLYWOOD IN SHANGHAI: Hollywood studio DreamWorks Animation SKG announced Tuesday plans to develop a $3.1 billion cultural and entertainment district in Shanghai with a group of Chinese partners. New York Times: "The Dream Center, a riverfront complex to cover six large city blocks, has ambitions to rival the Broadway theater district in New York and the West End in London, with theaters, performance halls, restaurants, shops and an entertainment zone with a 'Kung Fu Panda' theme." http://nyti.ms/O2SvF9
3. STARBUCKS SQUARED: In a move to accelerate its transactions, Starbucks yesterday announced a partnership with mobile paying platform Square that will take off this fall. Mashable: "The deal will not only bring Square into Starbucks, it will also bring Starbucks into Square. Starbucks is investing $25 million in Square as part of its latest round of funding, and Howard Schultz, Starbucks’s chief executive, will also join Square’s board."
4. WASHINGTON OLYMPICS: Locations for future summer Olympics have not yet been finalized beyond Brazil in 2016, which has people in Washington wondering if they should bid for the games in 2024. The city made an unsuccessful run at the 2012 games and may want to try again. CHICAGO: Chef Stephanie Izard of Top Chef and Girl & the Goat will open Little Goat in the West Loop in October. The diner from Boka Restaurant Group will have a second floor space for private events, and will serve dishes such as Sloppy Joes on fried steamed buns and Beef Cheek Stroganoff.
Brooke Shields will be the guest speaker at the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation's annual fall benefit luncheon on October 17 at the Hilton Chicago.
LAS VEGAS: MGM Resorts International and Morgans Hotel Group have announced a partnership to bring Delano Las Vegas, an all-suites hotel, to Mandalay Bay. Disney has scheduled the grand opening of New Fantasyland for December 6. Attractions included in this opening are Under the Sea—Journey of The Little Mermaid, Be Our Guest Restaurant, Enchanted Tales With Belle, Ariel’s Grotto, Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour! Village Gifts. The New Fantasyland expansion will continue with the opening of Princess Fairytale Hall in 2013, and a new Disney “mountain” in the form of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in 2014.
