1. FASHION ICON OSCAR DE LA RENTA DIES: Known as a go-to designer for high-profile events from the Oscars to presidential inaugurations, fashion designer Oscar de la Renta died Monday at age 82. The New York Times: “Determined to stay relevant, Mr. de la Renta achieved fame in two distinct realms: as a couturier to socialites—the so-called ladies-who-lunch, his bread and butter—and as a red-carpet king. He also dressed four American first ladies, but it was Hollywood glitz, rather than nice uptown clothes, that defined him for a new age and a new customer. Just as astutely he embraced social media.” http://nyti.ms/10hJWOV
2. WHAT LORDE HAS TO DO WITH THE WORLD SERIES: When one of the contenders for the World Series sharing the same name as a hit pop song, it makes for some amusing crossover stunt marketing. The singer Lorde has cited the Kansas City Royals as inspiring the title of “Royals,” her breakout hit, and now that the team is in the World Series vs. the San Francisco Giants, fans are taking sides over the song. Rolling Stone: “A pair of San Fran radio stations have announced they're removing ‘Royals’ from their playlists until the Series is done, after both were inundated with angry emails from listeners. Meanwhile, Kansas City's KZPT—which just so happens to be KOIT's sister station—has announced they'll be pumping ‘Royals’ into the highest-possible rotation, playing the song every hour on the hour on Tuesday.” http://rol.st/1zi08PE
