August 25, 2016: MTV and Other Brands to Create V.M.A. Snapchat Content, How Tokyo is Already Preparing For the 2020 Olympics, P.G.A. Tour Gets Social With Live Streams

1. MTV AND OTHER BRANDS TO CREATE V.M.A. SNAPCHAT CONTENT: Snapchat will play a huge part in MTV’s Video Music Awards on Sunday. The Viacom brand is expected to create original content on the social platform leading up to and during the ceremomy, along with brands including Taco Bell and Trojan Condoms. Advertising Age: “This is the first time MTV has produced content to run within a Live Story, said Chris Ficarra, exec VP-Viacom Velocity, the company's content marketing arm. Snapchat Live Stories have historically been populated by content from fans and talent, but this year MTV is giving users access to places fans don't typically get to go, like backstage or on stage. MTV will create two Live Stories tied to the music bonanza. The first will post in the 24 hours leading up to the show and will include a mix of throwback content and a look at the road to this year's show. The second will build during the live broadcast on Sunday and will include performances (Britney Spears is performing at the VMAs for the first time in nine years), acceptance speeches and other moments from Madison Square Garden. Taco Bell, Trojan Condoms, Orbit gum and the Truth anti-smoking campaign will run ads in the Live Stories and worked with MTV to produce other Snapchat content. Taco Bell, for example, will advertise its new Cheesy Core Burrito and a taco t-shirt fans can purchase. It will also promote its Live Mas scholarship with a video that will be featured on MTV's Snapchat Discover Channel. Taco Bell will host a live pre-VMA concert on Saturday that will be captured on Snapchat.” http://bit.ly/2bkF5GC

2. HOW TOKYO IS ALREADY PREPARING FOR THE 2020 OLYMPICS: The next Summer Olympic Games are four years away, but host city Tokyo has already begun preparations for a new Olympic Village and a new stadium to host the opening and closing ceremonies. The city also has plans for state-of-the-art venues and technology including humanoid robotics. USA Today: “The 2020 Games will debut five new sports: baseball/softball and karate—which are likely to produce medals for the Japanese—plus skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing. Though planning is well underway, there have been bumps along the road. The original stadium design was rejected after cost estimates tripled to $2.2 billion. Other venues have been relocated, scaled back or canceled because of rising costs or environmental concerns. Tokyo’s original plan called for a ‘compact’ Games with two-thirds of all venues located within 5 miles of the athletes’ bayside village. That’s been reduced to half and Tokyo’s new governor, Yuriko Koike, has called for a formal review that could bring further changes. “I will not leave white elephants to the taxpayers,” Koike, the first female elected to the post, said in Rio last weekend. Tokyo has set aside $4.5 billion to build venues and operate the Games, but that may not be enough, given Rio's painful experience. The 2016 Olympics will cost $4.6 billion, 50% more than an economically struggling Brazil had expected, according to a study by Oxford University’s business school. Olympian cost overruns should be no surprise, said Eva Leeds, an economics professor at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., who has studied the Tokyo bid. ‘We all agree that, whether we like it or not, the Olympics are a wonderful spectacle,’ said Leeds, a former visiting professor of economics at Temple University’s Japan Campus. ‘Economic studies indicate, however, that the Games do not have a positive impact on the economy. All Olympic Games run over budget by at least 100%.’" http://usat.ly/2bw3HuX

3. P.G.A. TOUR GETS SOCIAL WITH LIVE STREAMS: In a P.G.A. Tour first, live content from its golf events will be streamed on social media platforms, starting this week with the FedExCup. Forbes: "Most notably, the PGA Tour is testing a global live stream on Twitter and Facebook Live, offering more than 14 hours of its PGA Tour LIVE coverage during the first two events of the FedExCup playoffs.  In a significant first, the PGA Tour’s leap marks the first time that sports content will be streamed live on Twitter. The NFL next month kicks off its partnership with Twitter to stream 10 Thursday Night Football games globally. 'It’s no secret that social networks aggregate an incredible amount of audience,' Louis Goicouria, the PGA Tour’s senior vice president of digital platforms and media strategy, said in an interview. 'For us, it’s an opportunity to reach people who may not have tried this product yet. We feel it’s so strong. If you’re a golf fan, if you get a taste of it, you’ll want it.' Golf fans in particular have long griped about not being able to see on-course action before the television broadcast. The PGA Tour’s solution was PGA Tour LIVE, a subscription service that turned a year old last month and has been gaining in popularity. Now, in an effort to increase awareness of its live streaming offering, the PGA Tour is running a free trial for fans to watch the action on their iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, Android and on PGATourLive.com. What better time than during the start of the FedExCup playoffs?" http://bit.ly/2bOH9TV
