This year, Sin City chose to celebrate its centennial (the town site was established in 1905 but the municipality wasn't actually incorporated until 1911), so it's fitting that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) selected a birthday-bash theme for its client-appreciation party for Toronto-area destination planners. Michael Tarr, LVCVA's senior manager of regional sales, collaborated with Lindsay Crawford, senior account manager of the Peregrine Agency, to create a space rich in iconic Vegas imagery and completed by Vegas-inspired coloured lighting. The party was timed to coincide with the 2005 IncentiveWorks Show, an annual trade show targeting event and promotions professionals, held at the nearby Metro Toronto Convention Centre. According to the LVCVA, many of the party guests were also attendees of the trade show.
It's also fitting that the LVCVA held the event at DNA Lounge. After all, characters on the popular television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which is filmed in Las Vegas and has provided the city with free prime-time publicity for the past five years, often employ DNA technology to solve cases. Using DNA's clean lines and shiny rails as a starting point, Decor & More added black-and-white historical photos of the city, oversize chairs shaped like stiletto heels, custom gobos displaying casino logos on the floor, and, of course, plenty of colourful lighting.
The main lighting element was a large ice sculpture from the Ice Man that had a green glow and an inscription that read "Only Vegas, Centennial Celebration, 1905-2005, 100 Years in Neon". Other eye-grabbing lighting elements included a series of strategically placed hourglass-shaped light columns covered in hot-pink spandex and topped with bouffant white feathers and coloured Litecubes-brand plastic ice cubes inscribed with "Las Vegas." The cubes were served chilled in drinks and were free for the taking at the end of the night.
