W Hotels Worldwide recently announced plans to upgrade its W San Diego property. Thom Filicia is behind the new look, which will pair modern design with whimsical, beach-inspired elements.
The hotel’s street-level lounge, called the Living Room, will include multiuse seating areas and louvered indoor cabanas. An art installation of surfboard fins on the main wall will reflect the surf culture of Southern California, and in the evening, the space will transform into a lounge with room for 190. A DJ will spin from a suspended walkway above the bar.Veranda, the hotel’s second-floor bar, and the connecting outdoor pool are also slated for an update. Wraparound bungalow seating will accommodate 50, and two coral chandeliers along with a blue and white palette will add a nautical feel. Updates to the pool area (known as Wet) will include chaise lounges and a new wooden deck, which will provide space for 40. The upgrades are expected to debut in June, and renovations to Beach, the property’s rooftop bar, are planned for the fall.
