Not your typical charity event, the Playground Theatre's Mad Hatter's Tea Party on February 2 transported guests to the fantastical world of Alice in Wonderland. More than 100 attendees, more than half of them children, were treated to a whimsical tea party created by Sixth Star Entertainment & Marketing at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove, Miami in honor of the Playground's latest production, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
As guests arrived, they fell into Alice's world through a rabbit hole created with colorful props, fiber-optic lights, and rolling fog. Large framed pictures, small doors, and porcelain teacups added to the Wonderland-inspired decor.
Throughout the lobby and ballroom, guests had a variety of activities to choose from, including making Mad Hatter hats, playing croquet, and face painting. The mischievous Cheshire Cat and Alice were also on hand to take pictures with the kids.During the tea party, guests enjoyed canapés including smoked salmon triangles with caviar, cucumber sandwiches, and eggs on brioche. For those with less adventurous palates-namely, the children-the hotel also served star-shaped ham and cheese sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly cream puffs, and miniature Fluffernutter sandwiches.
While guests snacked on the bevy of dessert options, including mini brownies and fruit tarts, a children's fashion show-with clothing from Kidding Around, Mayda Cisneros, and Tommy's Tuxedo-took place on the stage. Following the show, the Playground Theatre troupe performed a scene from its production before auctioning off a cameo role to the kids.
At the end of the day, more than $30,000 was raised to benefit the theater's education and community outreach program, which helps underserved children in the greater Miami area.
