With all the work that goes into planning an event, a blizzard on your big day can cost you lots of time and money. But you can limit how much money you lose with a weather insurance policy.

Here's how they work: You pick certain weather criteria and times to insure; if those conditions are met, the policy pays the amount you've chosen. The policies cost a percentage of the agreed amount. (It ranges from 3 to 50 percent, depending on the typical weather conditions in the event's location; the average is 5 to 10 percent).

Some advice: Laurie Tillman of Good Weather Insurance Agency says it's important to pick the right hours to insure. For example, the weather during the hours before the event might influence turnout more than the weather during the event.
