Caterer Susannah Gaterud-Mack got some nice press for her company, Smaak, which feeds the fashion crowd. A profile in Monday's New York Post detailed her client list--Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent, Richard Avedon, Madonna--and offered a bit of gossip. (Designer Karl Lagerfeld requires Polaroids of the prospective all-male waitstaff for his parties, while the women get put in the kitchen.)
"Fashion people do tend to have more dietary constrictions," says Gaterud-Mack, who studied culinary arts in Paris and worked on events at Industria before starting her firm. "It's a bit more difficult to do their events because there are always vegetarians and a few vegans in the crowd...There are also usually a big mixture of people from many nationalities. So you have to consider their eating habits as well." Gaterud-Mack also offers her take on the current comfort food trend: instead of pigs in a blanket, she serves figs in a blanket.
