Pretty Penny for U.S. Open Tents

The caddies have gone home and Tiger Woods has walked away with another trophy, but the U.S. Open last weekend at Bethpage State Park will leave some lasting memories, especially for those spectators who watched the action from those swank luxury corporate tents. The New York Times reports that 78 large corporate tents hosted events, three times the number of tents at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, where the Open was last held in New York in 1995. The United States Golf Association charges hefty fees for the tents, with "a top price of $175,000 for the ritziest 40-by-40 foot tent in the Empire Village along the 18th fairway; the least expensive tents cost $85,000 for a 30-by-30 foot tent in the Liberty Village," according to the Times. "Last year, the four-day rental cost corporations from $75,000 to $150,000," plus food and drinks. The USGA is already booking tents for the 2004 Open, which will be back at Shinnecock Hills.
