On Tuesday, the New York State Legislature approved a $1.4 billion plan to expand the Javits Center, after splitting the plan apart from the proposal to build an adjacent Jets football stadium, at the cost of another $1.4 billion. The approval gives the go-ahead for construction to begin next year, adding 340,000 square feet of exhibition, meeting, ballroom, and hotel space. The new center and hotel will stretch from 34th to 42nd streets along 11th Avenue on the far West Side. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his administration had hoped to keep the Javits expansion linked to the stadium project, which is a key part of the city’s bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.
