El Museo Launches Expansion Project

Joining other art and cultural institutions in the recent spate of reconstructions and expansions (see the Morgan Library and the American Museum of the Moving Image), El Museo del Barrio will launch its $20 million capital renovation project this fall. At the museum’s annual gala dinner on Wednesday, museum chair Tony Bechard and director Julian Zugazagoitia spoke of the new design. Plans for the venue include redesigning the façade, updating the gallery spaces, and adding a courtyard and a café overlooking Central Park. The renovations are scheduled for completion in 2008.
