What's the Best Thing About Fashion Week?

We asked a sampling of people swirling around Smashbox Studios on the second day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week what has impressed them most so far.

“It’s so relaxed now since they moved the check-in area from the inside to the outside [of the tented lobby]. It used to feel like a big social event—like a bar. Now everyone’s been saying how comfortable it is in here.”
Sara Marton, Full Picture publicist

“The 2(x)ist fashion show. Men in underwear.”
Janice Dickinson, modeling agent/reality TV personality

“Watching the burlesquer give [IMG Fashion senior vice president] Fern Mallis a lap dance [at the Dina Bar-El show], and watching all the guests reacting to that. That was the high point by far.”

“I loved being on the West Coast for my personal fashion tour. I was in San Francisco for [IMG consumer fashion event] Fashion Week Live, and now I’m down here for these shows. The weather is just so much nicer and I can bust out my spring fashions.”
Chad Thompson, New York-based founder/creative director for Communa-k

“I grew up in a house with nine boys, and I have three sons, so I just enjoy being around all the girls and the fashions. Plus, I like that it’s a different [industry] from the movie premieres I usually shoot. But to be honest, it’s stupid to have the step-and-repeat wall where it is [outside the tent]. Ideally it should be somewhere less congested, and it wouldn’t hurt if it were bigger.”

“My favorite thing so far was the new BoxEight event downtown, at the Los Angeles Theatre [not an official part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week]. I saw the Eduardo Lucero presentation there, and this lavish 1931 building provided a truly dramatic backdrop. The event also included a gallery space as well as antique-style furnishings—great for photos and atmosphere. The fashion show itself included tiered seating, which allowed everyone to see the show well and provided an intriguing juxtaposition between old and new, giving the theater’s ornate decor a more modern and industrial feel.”
