Hotel to Replace Library, Connect With 21 Club

On Wednesday, Orient-Express Hotels disclosed that it has signed an agreement to acquire the land and building of the New York Public Library's Donnell branch on West 53rd Street. Situated behind the Orient-Express-owned 21 Club on 52nd Street, the proposed development is a 150-room hotel, which will share 28,000 square feet of its space with the redesigned library. The New York Public Library will retain ownership of the three floors it will occupy; the current Donnell Library Center will close next fall.

Of particular interest to the event industry is the announcement that the hotel company plans to connect this new building to the famous club. Expected to open in 2011, the hotel will be marketed under a new 21 Hotel brand name and will offer dining and spa facilities as well as expanded space for 21 Club. The Times has more info.
