Having an open bar in the Hamptons this summer might land you in a heap of trouble. Ruth Vered (of the Vered Gallery) left her own party in a squad car on Saturday night after refusing to stop serving drinks at the post-opening reception.
The 300 guests at her party drank for free during the evening, and some even took their cocktails outside the gallery before the East Hampton police arrived. Vered’s arrest may have had more to do with her disposition than her violation—she looked less than cooperative on the covers of The Daily News and The New York Post—but this development does point to a potential trend for this summer.Terry Wallace, another Hamptons gallery owner, told The Post that the State Liquor Authority discovered last summer that receptions of this size and nature violate state liquor laws and were going on unenforced. The laws require that hosts apply for one-day permits if they plan on distributing booze to guests.
Parties at another gallery and a neighboring boutique also received citations for serving alcohol on Saturday, and The Post mentioned that one anonymous boutique owner claimed he was harassed into not serving any alcohol at his party.
