Although the $626 million proposal from the Related Companies for a waterside entertainment complex was nixed earlier this year, Pier 40 may still get a space for events. According to The New York Post yesterday, the $430 million bid from the Pier 40 Partnership, CampGroup, and Urban Dove was sent to the Hudson River Park Trust last week and includes plans for athletic fields, rooftop gyms, swimming pools, and three public high schools, as well as a hall for corporate parties and other events. The section for events is, according to Downtown Express, to occupy 50,000 square feet on the ground floor of the pier. The proposal is likely to be supported by local community groups, but its financial viability is still uncertain.

Opposed by many neighborhood groups, the plan—dubbed "Vegas on the Hudson" by the opposition—would have put a home for Cirque du Soleil on the west Chelsea pier and added shops, restaurants, a music hall, and a 28,650-square-foot event space to the site. Located within the Hudson River Park, the crumbling structure is one of the larger piers on the west side of Manhattan. It currently houses activity and recreation spaces and has played host to several events over the past few years, including Y-3's fall/winter fashion show in February.
