1. NEW YORK MAYORAL ELECTION PARTY PLANNED BY OHIO EVENT FIRM: When Bill De Blasio was elected mayor of New York City Tuesday night, supporters gathered in the Park Slope Armory to celebrate at a party planned by an event firm from, curiously, Youngstown, Ohio. As The New York Post said, “As if there aren’t any party planners in New York City.” The company, FortyTwo Event Production has worked on other high-profile gigs, including campaign events for President Obama. “You would think the campaign could handle that themselves?” a veteran political strategist told the Post. “They hired an Ohio party planner? It doesn’t seem genius.” http://bit.ly/1eeFdBT
2. LEGENDARY NIGHTCLUB RETURNS AS ART EXHIBIT: In-the-know artists and scenesters remember AREA, a New York nightclub that opened 30 years ago. It reopened this month—as an art exhibit at the gallery Hole—and some of its former patrons attended an opening event November 5 with details such as cocktails in Campbell's soup cans, DJ duo Andrew Andrew donning Andy Warhol wigs and recreating one of his pieces, and performers in roller skates and tube socks. 3. HOW BROADWAY INFLUENCED SALES SHOWS AND CONVENTIONS: At conventions and sales events from the 1950s to the 1980s, one tactic of companies like Ford, Shell, and Keds was to stage Broadway-style “industrial musicals” from professional composers, lyricists, and singers. These earnest shows introduced new product lines and motivated employees, but since they happened at private events were unknown to the public. Steve Young, a writer for the Late Show With David Letterman, explores this relic in a new book, and discussed it on an appearance on NPR’s Fresh Air: http://n.pr/1gpLpHO
