1. SHOULD BRANDS BE STORYTELLING OR STORY MAKING?: In a article for AdAge, creative agency MRY's chief marketing officer David Berkowiz argues marketers shouldn't be telling stories, but empowering their audiences to create their own stories, using Coca-Cola's "Share a Coke" campaign as an example. "The 'Share a Coke' campaign with names and relationship descriptors on cans and bottle labels empowers people to create their own stories. I see these moments happen all the time with colleagues and friends, where the brand is the catalyst for the stories they are making about themselves. ...The future of storytelling isn't about telling anyone anything. It's about storymaking, where the brand facilitates and taps into the stories people are creating and sharing with each other. Storytelling is the epitome of the old one-way, broadcast mindset that so many of us in marketing are trying to leave behind. Storymaking, by contrast, is far more fulfilling, and exactly what will matter to the people all of our brands are trying to reach." http://bit.ly/1u121g8
2. CLIMATE CHANGE MARCH TO HIT NEW YORK: Ahead of Tuesday's United Nations summit on climate change, the People's Climate March is expected to bring more than 100,000 participants, including, according to Mashable, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. "'I will link arms with those marching for climate action,' Ban told a press conference. 'We stand with them on the right side of this key issue for our common future.' Ban said he wants the summit to be a momentum builder, rather than a formal negotiating session, and the march is designed to provide a boost of grassroots energy ahead of that crucial meeting." http://on.mash.to/1qilgKM
3. C.E.S. FOUNDER DIES: Jack Wayman, the man who organized the first show for the consumer electronics industry, died. The New York Times: "Mr. Wayman’s title when he founded the group was senior vice president for consumer sales of the manufacturers’ Electronic Industries Association. In practice, he was the industry’s top salesman and chief carnival barker during a sea change in consumer culture. He organized the first Consumer Electronics Show in 1967, in New York. At the time, the industry’s product line consisted of televisions, radios and phonographs for the most part. By 2012, when he attended his last show at 90, riding in a golf cart, the wares had become a virtual universe of gadgetry capable (theoretically) of connecting everyone on the planet." http://nyti.ms/1qhphz4
4. WHEN V.I.P. GUESTS CANCEL: For publicists, event marketers, meeting planners, and anyone who relies on big-name guests to attract press attention at face-to-face gatherings, no-shows can be stressful, but not all organizers panic. At least, the folks behind the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s Angels in Adoption gala didn’t. The Washington Post's Reliable Source: “'I thought they’d be devastated and panicking,' said [publicist Brian] Franklin, 'but for the organization, the event is still going to happen no matter what.' Still, Franklin and other publicists we spoke with said that the star factor is not to be sniffed at. 'The PR exposure behind a celeb appearance has priceless ad value,' explained Dannia Hakki, the principal of MoKi Media, a D.C.-based talent and PR agency. A famous attendee can bring in more dollars at a fund-raiser or simply offer an A-list stamp of approval." http://wapo.st/1qhJuor
