1. APPLE ANNOUNCES MEDIA EVENT: Apple sent press invitations to an event in March largely assumed to be the launch of Apple Watch. Bloomberg: “‘Spring forward,’ reads the invitation to the event, to be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater at 10 a.m. The headline refers to the annual switch to daylight savings time, when Americans move their clocks and watches forward by one hour. This year, the time shift begins on March 8, a day before Apple’s event.” http://bloom.bg/1G0hsLj
2. INSIDE CPAC’S LEGAL DISPUTE WITH MARRIOTT: Although it had an agreement to hold the annual Conservative Political Action Conference at the Marriott Wardman Park from 2010 to 2014, the American Conservative Union moved its signature conference to another Washington-area hotel starting in 2013. Marriott sued, and although the dispute eventually was settled with private terms, details are just now emerging. Washingtonian: “The agreement’s cancellation provision, Marriott’s lawyers insisted, required the ACU to pay Marriott $606,430 in lost revenue for the 2013 conference and $272,715 for the 2014 conference. In its letter to the Marriott terminating the agreement, CPAC insisted it wouldn’t pay these damages. In addition, Marriott alleged that ACU hadn’t paid $685,565 in bills from the 2012 conference, which took place at the Marriott Wardman Park. … In its legal filings, however, the ACU tells an entirely different version of the story. The organization insisted in a response that Marriott breached the contract by providing awful service during the 2012 convention, and that the harm ACU sustained during this event was greater than the $1.6 million that Marriott demanded.” http://bit.ly/1EwRFsz
3. WHY HIGH-PROFILE GALAS MATTER TO FASHION BRANDS: Peter Copping, who took over at Oscar de la Renta after the fashion icon’s death, is also trying to fill his shoes on the social circuit. He attended the Museum of the City of New York’s Winter Ball this week and noted the importance of galas to his job. Women’s Wear Daily: “Courting the upper crust is an adjunct duty of his new role as creative director of Oscar de la Renta—one that de la Renta himself fulfilled with gusto. … ‘I think he was out pretty much every night of the week—he was a very social man. So, yes, I want to keep that going, but obviously in my own way.’” http://bit.ly/1JUg3IZ
