January 12, 2016: David Bowie Tribute Concert to Continue, How Tech Is Influencing the Detroit Auto Show, Golden Globes Ratings Drop

1. DAVID BOWIE TRIBUTE CONCERT TO CONTINUE: An all-star tribute concert for David Bowie—announced just hours before the iconic pop star passed away on Sunday—will continue as planned March 31 at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. The Roots, Cyndi Lauper, Jakob Dylan, Bettye LaVette, and a band led by Bowie’s longtime producer, Tony Visconti, are scheduled to perform, and planners project that more stars may join to show their respect for the legend. Entertainment Weekly: “Obviously we thought we were going to be paying tribute to a living legend, and now we’ll be paying tribute to a legend who passed,” said City Winery director and C.E.O. Michael Dorf, who is planning the concert. http://bit.ly/1ZnQyYv

2. HOW TECH IS INFLUENCING THE DETROIT AUTO SHOW: One of the big story lines at International C.E.S. last week was how many auto companies were attending. But at the kickoff of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Monday, auto companies are bringing more of the tech world to the auto show. Time: “Paeans to traditional automotive virtues—power, speed, driving dynamics—were overshadowed by talk of apps, Internet connectivity, and vehicles that leave the white-knuckling to algorithms. … ‘Everybody is talking about Silicon Valley disrupting the car business,' said [Ford Motor Company C.E.O. Mark] Fields. ‘But we’re going to disrupt ourselves.’” http://ti.me/1Q2cD92

3. GOLDEN GLOBES RATINGS DROP: Fewer viewers tuned in to watch the Golden Globes award show on NBC, with a ratings drop of 4 percent compared to last year. The lack of a clear front-runner film, a host with a familiar shtick, and a trend in declining viewership for award shows overall may have contributed to the decline. Variety: “Over the past 12 months, the Oscars, Grammys, Primetime Emmys and Tonys have all been down vs. their prior telecast, with the Globes seeing smaller declines than the others. Just about the only top-tier awards show up is the Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS.” http://bit.ly/1RH3UZE
