New York Giants star cornerback Jason Sehorn hosted the Summer Camp Opportunities Provide an Edge (SCOPE) winter fund-raiser at the China Club to help raise money to send 700 inner-city children to summer camp. The event included a live auction of a signed Sehorn jersey, and a silent auction of several donated prizes, including dinners at several New York restaurants including the Blue Note, Bambou and Max's Grille; vacation packages; tickets to Mets, Knicks, and Giants games; and gift sets from Bobbi Brown cosmetics, Time Out New York, Maximum Golf magazine and TV sensation Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
After giving a short speech about SCOPE and his own non-profit group, the Jason Sehorn Foundation, the Giants star held a lively auction of his jersey. The auction ended with a winning bid of $10,000 by Gene Formica. ("Imagine if we'd won the Super Bowl," Sehorn joked.) In the end, two jerseys were signed and given to the top two bidders for $6,000 each, allowing the foundation to rake in an extra $2,000 with a second jersey.
The club's chef, Evan Ross, found a way to remind people of the benefit's purpose. He filled a hollowed-out log with white rock salt and used it as an hors d'oeuvres tray. The log, which looked exactly like the kind of wood campers use to fuel a fire, served as a great visual reminder of the night's summer camp theme.
