1. SILICON VALLEY’S ILL-FITTING FASHION SHOW: The three-night Silicon Valley Fashion Week, sponsored by the clothing start-up Betabrand, closed with a burlesque show, not exactly the right look for a tech industry dealing with a culture of sexism. Mashable: “Maybe the performance was just that — all in good, sexy fun. We have nothing against burlesque. But for an industry that is working hard to appear, and actually be, more inclusive to women, ending its very first fashion week attempt with scantily-clad women doing risqué dance routines sends a message. And probably not the one the show's creators were going for.” http://on.mash.to/1A2cLzr
2. INTERNATIONAL C.E.S. ANNOUNCES RECORD ATTENDANCE: A record 176,676 attended the 2015 International C.E.S., according to an independent audit released by the show owner and producer the Consumer Electronics Association. Press release: “The 2015 CES also set a number of other records, including more than 3,600 exhibitors, more than 2.23 million net square feet of exhibit space, 6,952 media and analyst attendees, 703,602 mentions of #CES2015 during the show with 7.51 billion total potential Twitter impressions, and 153 countries represented.” http://bit.ly/1Pl9t11
3. THE BEST AND WORST OF VENICE BIENNALE PAVILIONS: At the Venice Biennale, the exhibiting countries have produced a range of pavilions—some beautiful, some thought-provoking, and some bizarre. From a skeleton in Albania’s pavilion to France’s installation of slow-moving trees, here’s a look at what they came up with. New York: “Going to the Venice Biennale is like getting a tour of dozens of different countries, each with its own showcase, all in the course of a day. It’s a bit like going to Epcot, but instead of some animatronic puppets celebrating progress and capitalism, you have contemporary art from around the world showing off whatever that country’s arts elites think is appropriate to show the world.” http://bit.ly/1ID4mna
4. NEW TICKETING APP HAS BACKING FROM SPORTS OWNERS: Gametime, a new app offering mobile-only tickets, announced $13.3 million in Series A financing and announced owners of the San Francisco Giants, New Jersey Devils, and Sacramento Kings as investors. New York Post: “San Francisco-based Gametime currently provides last-minute tickets to 150 major US teams. And it’s the only online service to sell tickets up to an hour after a game begins — an impulsive buy, if ever there was one, that already accounts for 3 percent of company sales.” http://bit.ly/1e32tFd
