Making appearances at special events is more popular than ever with celebrities, according to The New York Post. "Some artists earn more than 50 percent of their yearly income performing at [private or corporate events]," Sunday's story reports, citing the price tags of lots of big stars. Divas Mariah Carey, Shania Twain and Celine Dion require at least a million bucks, and you've got to have more than $1.5 million in your pocket before trying to book Ricky Martin, Whitney Houston or Metallica. Other stars and their prices: Carlos Santana ($750,000), Jennifer Lopez (reportedly $750,000 an hour) and Jay Leno and Bill Cosby ($300,000 a piece, plus $10,000 to fuel their private jets).
So who's hot? Young artists Macy Gray, Christina Aguilera and the Goo Goo Dolls. "Companies are hiring people like Sugar Ray and the Wallflowers to say, 'Hey, look, we're hip, we're young and we understand the Y generation," one booking company exec says. Meanwhile, big, established stars still score huge deals. The Eagles--whose asking price is $2.5 million--are getting requests "left and right." The Rolling Stones played a Pepsi gig for around $3.5 million in 1998, and Bob Dylan and his son, Jakob, played for Applied Materials in 1998 for $1 million. Aerosmith just booked its first corporate show ever, for $1 million.
Although one booking exec says, "For the right price you can pretty much hire anyone you want," there are some holdouts: Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Phish and Neil Young have steadfastly refused to do corporate gigs.
