* INCOMING *
1. INAUGURATION BALL HOPPING: For a whirlwind tour of inaugural events this weekend—cheekily titled "The Running of the (Inaugural) Balls"—two Washington Post reporters describe the scenes: "I’ve landed in Iowa, land of my people, at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. I must pause in order to consume three fried Twinkies, stat. Woman next to me, dreamily: 'It’s almost as good as being at the Iowa State Fair.'" http://wapo.st/Wa4DGh
Can't make it to Washington? The Presidential Inaugural Committee will live stream many of today's events including the ceremonial swearing-in, the Inaugural Parade, and the Commander-in-Chief Ball. They are available at 2013pic.org/live and on PIC's smartphone app. Press release: http://bit.ly/Xl9pOf

2. WRIGLEY WRANGLING: Chicago Tribune: "Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts said Saturday the team will fund an ambitious $300 million renovation plan at Wrigley Field if the city eases some of its restrictions around Wrigley Field." The team also would like to hold more concerts at the historic venue and create a street-fest on Sheffield Avenue similar to the Red Sox's Yawkey Way. http://bit.ly/V0k6FI
3. DANCE CRAZE: The events firm behind the Electric Daisy Carnival festival may be up for sale, capitalizing on the rising popularity of electronic dance music. New York Times: "Bidders for the company include Live Nation Entertainment and … SFX Entertainment. AEG Live and Red Light Management, an artist management firm with interests in music festivals like Bonnaroo, have also made offers but are not believed to be strong contenders in the auction." http://nyti.ms/11ExiXI
4. FILE-SHARE FETE: Kim Dotcom—a tech entrepreneur under indictment for piracy—launched a new file-sharing Web site with a major event at his New Zealand mansion this weekend. Associated Press: "In Dotcom's typical grandiose style, the launch party featured a tongue-in-cheek reenactment of the dramatic raid on his home a year earlier, when New Zealand police swooped down in helicopters onto the mansion grounds and nabbed him in a safe room where he was hiding. … A helicopter roared overhead and faux police agents rappelled down the side of his mansion. Dotcom eventually ordered everyone to "stop this madness!" before breaking out into a dance alongside miniskirt-clad 'guards' as music boomed." http://yhoo.it/T76zRi
5. MEETINGS TRENDS: Budgets continue to rise but short lead times are becoming the norm, according to Meeting Professionals Internationa's December 2012 Business Barometer report. Another finding is that remote access to meeting content live or on demand is becoming more popular. www.mpiweb.org
6. MICROSOFT EVENTS HIRE: Scott Schenker, formerly vice president of global events for German software company SAP, will become Microsoft's next general manager of events and studio. For the past three years, Schenker has been responsible for strategy and management of SAP's more than 100 programs and 1,500 sponsorships, including a transformation of the company's huge Sapphire Now annual conference (which topped BizBash's 2012 list of the most innovative meetings: http://bit.ly/Qfjyx1). Schenker begins at Microsoft February 11.
