When Philadelphia-area natives Casey Patten and David Mazza moved to Washington in 2002, they liked the region but not the hoagie (or submarine sandwich) options available locally. Unable to find a carry-out operation making the sandwiches with the right ingredients, the two men opened Taylor Gourmet, a sandwich shop and grocery in the Atlas district of Northeast.

Breads come from Philly's noted Sarcone’s bakery and are layered with select meats and cheeses, dressed with olive oil, red wine vinegar, and Italian seasoning. (Hold the mayo and mustard.) A selection of arugula salads and the shop’s signature risotto balls are also available. Most six-inch hoagies are $6.90, and 12-inch versions cost $8.90. There is a flat $2 delivery charge for downtown orders.
