When Deborah McGrath decided to leave her corporate consulting job to open a blow dry and makeup bar in Toronto, the mother of two traveled to New York to research the concept. So when she chose a theme for the opening of Do My Hair—her new midtown boutique—the Big Apple provided the inspiration. "The thinking behind it was very New York, so I wanted it to have a Manhattan-chic feel," McGrath said of Tuesday's launch party, which drew more than 200 guests.
McGrath called on Candice Best of Best PR Boutique to plan the event. A yellow cab adorned with Do My Hair decals sat parked outside the salon on Mount Pleasant Road, and toy taxis topped trays holding glasses of champagne. Cupcakes adorned with mini hairdryers, supplied by Lollicakes, and a silver bowl filled with bottles of Jackson-Triggs Sparkling Cuvée sat atop the front counter.
Best placed floral arrangements from Quince Flowers throughout the space and filled the sinks at the salon's two shampoo stations with floating candles and petals. Servers passed hors d'oeuvres from Yorkshire Pudding, and DJ Eric Ling spun tunes in a tent accessed through the salon's rear door. Bartenders offered a selection of Strut wines, and guests could sample a variety of coffee drinks at an espresso bar sponsored by Nescafé Dolce Gusto.
The hair and makeup bar is available for private bookings for groups of as many as 40.
