Who says Angelenos don't love culture? All signs indicated otherwise last night at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Late Night party, where blocks-long lines snaked in both directions from the institution's entrance well in advance of the party's 7 p.m. start time. (One line was for guests who had RSVP'ed online, and the other was for the un-RSVP'ed; both options were free, and the event was open to the public.) All told, this year's version of the annual fete brought in close to 8,000 guests.The galleries were open and guests were welcome to view the art on
exhibit, including party-appropriate neon works by Dan Flavin. (We saw
one guest trip over a piece that was low to the floor, but
we suspect it was the crowds and not the booze available at multiple
bars that caused the accident.) Ima Robot and the Rebirth performed,
and DJs including Steve Aoki spun. Hit & Run silk-screened T-shirts on the spot, and the Lucent Dossier Vaudeville troupe (who also took their unique breed of costumed performance art to Coachella) entertained the crowd. Special screenings of the new Hairspray movie as well as Apollo documentary In the Shadow of the Moon showed during the course of the evening, which continued until 3 a.m.
