KING CAKES
King cakes: these rich, doughy cakes--baked in honor of the three wise men--are covered with a sweet topping and decorated with purple, green and gold colored sugars. Inside each cake is a small baby charm representing the baby Jesus. These cakes are traditionally cooked on January 6 (12 days after Christmas), but they're also a staple of Mardi Gras celebrations. Tradition has it that whoever gets the piece of cake with the baby is responsible for hosting the next king cake party.
McKenzie's Pastry Shoppes originated the king cake tradition in the early 1940's.
Gambino's Bakery is the most famous king cake bakery in New Orleans.
King Kake King ships king cakes overnight in a Mardi Gras gift box, complete with beads, doubloons (aluminum coins thrown to spectators during Mardi Gras parades), and a copy of Arthur Hardy's Mardi Gras Guide.
Haydel's Bakery bakes Cajun pastries, cheesecakes and pies in addition to king cakes.
Randazzo's Camellia City Bakery makes king cakes fresh daily and ships them nationwide within 48 hours.

The box includes three packets of colored sugar, a plastic baby charm and suggestions for imitating a king cake using doughnut holes, doughnuts twists or coffeecake. Ablaze Productions also sell beads, masks, doubloons and other Mardi Gras decorations and accessories.
