Sloan-Kettering's Bash for Tiny Tykes

March 18, 2003
The farmer had his hands full. Tiny hands were squeezing the ducklings and banging the bunny on the head as he tried to maneuver his mini petting zoo—a rabbit and a half-dozen ducklings in a box—through the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Bunny Hop benefit at FAO Schwarz. And while he chided them to "be gentle," many of the kids were so excited to see live animals that they didn't listen.
The mini petting zoo (from Party Kidz) was just one of the many amusements at the fund-raiser, which marked its 12th year and was coordinated by Nicole Micco, Barbara McLaughlin and Evie Brown of the society. Many of the same event vendors were back again this year: Mikey Mike Entertainment's disco had kids and parents shakin' it on the second floor, and Magic Al Garber had the kids mesmerized with his tricks and jokes. Among the strolling cartoon characters this year were Pikachu, Snoopy, Peter Rabbit, Cookie Monster and Shrek, whose appearance seemed to upset the youngest guests more than amuse them. The Rockettes were also back this year, as was an actress dressed as Rapunzel, who was often mistaken for Barbie.

Scalamandre, the luxe interior design fabric company that sponsored the event, added its own touches to the evening's decor. A new edition of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls dressed in Scalamandre's bunny-patterned toile fabric were on display and available for sale. The event's chairpersons—Leslie Heaney, Mary Darling and Leslie Coleman—were attired in custom-made Scalamandre fabric outfits. And Craig & Company's Easter basket flower arrangements filled with tulips, snapdragons, daffodils, anemones and hyacinth were tied with ribbon made with Scalamandre fabric.

While many kids ate from Party Box's junk-food buffet of chicken fingers, mini hot dogs, macaroni and cheese and pizza, several young guests munched from the passed sushi trays. And even though the dessert tables were temptingly laden with candy, brownies, mini tartlets, cupcakes and cookies, Cookie Monster showed surprising restraint.

While officially buying the building before the gala was always the goal, event planner Sam Palmer was careful to ensure the gathering would be successful even if the timing didn’t work out. “We had a million different plans, because quite frankly, a million details needed to go right for that to happen,' he said. 'Our leadership and board worked very, very hard to get us across the finish line, and it was a beautiful moment.”
