Tonys Supper Ball Is Big on Color

June 9, 2004
Following the telecast of the American Theatre Wing’s Tony awards, the crowd of 1,700 Broadway professionals and theater devotees shuffled out of Radio City Music Hall and walked the short distance to Rockefeller Center for the annual Tony supper ball. Suzanne Tobak and Michael Lawrence from Tobak-Dantchik Events & Promotions produced this year’s event, with PR by Keith Sherman & Associates and décor by Flowers, Sticks and Stones: Design by Susan Edgar.
The evening's "One Night Only" theme matched host Hugh Jackman's opening number in the award show, and designer Susan Edgar's decor created five colorful lounges that encouraged continuous movement throughout Rockefeller Center's restaurant level. Bentley Meeker lit the Rink Bar and projected colorful circles and the Tony icon on screens and the surrounding tents. DJ Max Salpetrier piped Norah Jones and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole tunes out onto the dance floor and throughout Rockefeller Center, where pedestrians peeked from above the gala, perhaps catching a glimpse of celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Sigourney Weaver, John Lithgow and Jimmy Fallon as they descended the stairs by the Rink Bar.

The lounge that flanked the dance floor featured vinyl and velour throw pillows, and tables arranged in a flower pattern mimicked the flower projections on the ceiling of the tent. Another lounge was shades of hot pink and violet, with long communal tables covered with pink organza and smooth stones. Purple velour circular banquettes provided extra seating for the large crowd. A blue room was styled after a more formal dining room with climbing centerpieces of ruscus, lemon leaf, blue irises and curly willow branches that seemed to grow into the ceiling.

Restaurant Associates provided several entrees for the theater crowd, including chicken scaloppine, pepper-seared sirloin with tarragon horseradish and salmon with wasabi cream. Carving stations throughout the lounges allowed guests to move from one area to another without fear of going hungry. The party was just gathering steam by the time Tony winners Jefferson Mays and Phylicia Rashad arrived on the scene at midnight.

'Our leadership and board worked very, very hard to get us across the finish line, and it was a beautiful moment.”
