At the launch of Thierry Mugler’s latest fragrance, Alien—his first in more than a decade—beauty editors were immersed in the color, smell, and ambience of the perfume (not to mention the heat and humidity of the day). For the event, held in Boylan Studios, Mugler and Elizabeth Reed and Diane Biancamano of Clarins USA (the fragrance's distributor) worked with event designer Jes Gordon to highlight the unusual shape and vibrant purple color of Alien’s bottle.
The centerpiece of Gordon’s design was a pool of water constructed in the center of the room by Composition Workshop and surrounded by clear, cylindrical Lucite columns topped with white pillar candles and oversized versions of the bottle. To one side was a small waterfall (also by Composition Workshop), and billowing white curtains and simple white furniture stood in contrast to the purple perfume bottles dotting the airy white studio space in the Starrett-Lehigh building.
Travel candles and miniature incense sticks from the Alien line were lit during the event, adding an aromatic element to the experience. Power Posse Productions gave the venue an eerie violet glow and projected promotional images onto the walls.
Caterer Urban Events matched the color theme, dressing its servers in white cotton uniforms (designed and sewn by Gordon) and giving the hors d’oeuvres amethyst accents: chèvre and leek button tartlets dusted with violet powder, ginger chicken on a crostini with blackberry ancho sauce, and violet-infused gelato. Beverages also came in purple, including champagne with violet simple syrup and a blackberry reduction proffered to guests with mini medicine droppers.
