Ten days of celebrity sightings, celluloid premieres, and late-night parties—the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is a nonstop affair. Each year on the first night of the festival, the TIFF organizing committee sets the tone for the events to come with a blowout in honour of the opening gala film. Since this year's opener was Deepa Mehta's Water, TIFF director of special events Barbara Hershenhorn used the wet stuff as the evening's theme.
Hershenhorn, whose company Party Barbara handled the event design and decor, got things going outside the entrance to the Liberty Grand with two columns of ice, each inscribed with "Water." In the foyer, cable hung from the ceiling was strung with balls of ice, creating a curtain that gave way to the party spaces beyond.
In one space, 70-foot-long bars lit in pink from Yukon Events featured a swirling, watery design. In another, imposing ice columns uplit by ESG Lighting towered over the guests. Other design elements included lush white fabrics draped from the walls, also lit by ESG, and tables covered in sheer white linens with raised white stitching in a checked pattern from Around the Table.
Krista Slack and Associates decorated the V.I.P. area on the balcony with colourful South Asian fabrics and accent pieces such as small brass elephants, in a nod to Water's Indian setting.
