Actress Pamela Anderson is famous for playing a sex kitten in films and on television. But for the launch event of Virgin Mobile Canada's new how-to book, The Joy of Text: Your Guide to a More Satisfying Text Life, she took on a new part—that of "text kitten." Anderson sported a skintight T-shirt with that title emblazoned in bright red letters as she spoke tongue in cheek to journalists about her "text life." She said she sends cell phone text messages "everywhere, and all the time, and a lot—and my fingers do get tired."Organized by Jen Koster, Hill & Knowlton senior consultant, and Erica Faltous, assistant consultant, the book launch and Anderson photo op were elements of Virgin's annual Valentine's Day promotional blitz. For that reason, Paula Lash, Virgin's public relations director, chose to emphasize red in the decor and catering. Anderson sat on a red chair in the shape of lips in front of a red-curtain backdrop while speaking to members of the media. The buffet from Ginger Island Cuisine included a platter of strawberry bruschetta, ruby beet napoleons (double-decker heart-shaped beets stacked with gorgonzola cheese and toasted hazelnuts), heart-shaped grilled cheese sandwiches, and chocolate sushi. At the request of Anderson, who is vegetarian, no meat was served.
When the event was over, departing journalists received a red velour envelope containing a copy of the Joy of Text, a note pad, mint lip balm, cinnamon mints, and a humorous page of instructions for mobile "textercises"—most notably the "Thumb Wave" which instructs the sender to wave a fully extended thumb from left to right, repeating ten times.

Ginger Island Cuisine served strawberry bruschetta on clear glass platters over a bed of strawberries.

An arrangement of fruit "flowers" accented the buffet, which was set up in front of a red wall decorated with a time line of Virgin's corporate history.

Double-decker heart-shaped beet gorgonzola sandwiches enclosed in square glass containers were displayed on risers of candy hearts.
