First Canadian Title kicked off its Monopoly-theme client-appreciation event by—you guessed it—sending arriving guests to jail. Female greeters in top hats and tails from welcomed more than 400 realtors, lawyers, and lenders in front of the Liberty Grand by directing them to the entrance, which was decorated to resemble a jailhouse door. Allison Jones, First Canadian Title's coordinator of marketing communications, worked with K & M Productions to plan the annual gathering. Jones said Monopoly was a fitting motif given the guests and the industry in which they worked. "Our clients are players in their fields and, like the game, our business is about owning titles," she said.Designing Trendz posted faux street signs on lamp posts around the periphery of the space to create the impression that the venue was a large Monopoly board. But instead of Monopoly street names like Park Avenue and St. Charles Place, the signs displayed realty terms. Railway properties loom large in Monopoly, and their decor received special attention. There were mock train tracks on the food-station tables, working model trains, a large model caboose, and railway road-crossing lights. Flowers filled large chests representing the community chest in Monopoly; Monopoly paraphernalia such as money and property cards embellished the tabletops; a strolling model wore a Monopoly board; and an actor portraying policeman continuously threatened guests with jail time. Monopoly mascot Rich Uncle Pennybags appeared both in the form of an actor strolling among the guests and as an image carved on the sides of a series of ice sculptures from Iceculture.
Liberty Grand served a basic menu that included mini burgers and chicken drumettes. Rick Sonata, a Frank Sinata imitator, provided entertainment. Guests received Travel Monopoly, a portable version of the property trading game, as a parting gift.
