At its seventh annual film benefit on November 10, the Museum of Modern Art honored writer and director Alfonso CuarĂłn. The Academy Award-winning director's 2013 acclaimed movie served as the catalyst for the event's design.
"Inspired by Alfonso's latest movie, Gravity, we created our rendition of space with a composition of geometric shapes and LED light ribbons. Lucite tables, candlelight, and deep indigo blue accents completed the look," said the museum's assistant director of special programming and events, Tania Abitbol, who worked with Concept Event Group to produce the Chanel-sponsored event.
Guests, including Michael Bloomberg, Barry Diller, Diane von Fürstenberg, actresses Katie Holmes and Leelee Sobieski, and director Guillermo del Toro, mingled in the cocktail area before heading into the Roy and Niuta Titus Theater for a presentation featuring clips from Cuarón's notable films such as A Little Princess, Y Tu Mamá También, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Children of Men. Scenes from his movies were also projected on the walls throughout the venue.
Following the film montage, attendees entered the museum's lobby, which was transformed into an elegant intergalactic dining space. A mix of round and rectangular clear tables, sleek white chairs, deep blue carpeting, and geometric centerpieces all paid homage to Gravity. Large metal angular sculptures hung from the ceiling, while LED light strips, similar to an aircraft's path lighting, added illuminating accents to the venue.
