How Lighting Set a Futuristic Tone at This Gala

The American Cancer Society's Discovery Ball had a futuristic look and feel that underscored its tagline: "accelerating the cure."

The American Cancer Society hosted its Discovery Ball at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel on April 25. This year's theme had a futuristic overtone that inspired the look and feel of the 750-guest soiree. "We had the privilege of working with [Web and print designer] Gyro Chicago who provided this year’s tagline, 'accelerating the cure,'" said Brittany Johnson, senior development manager of distinguished events. "It was from this idea of propelling toward a cancer-free world that our theme was born."

HMR Designs handled decor and used everything from industrial-lamp centerpieces to sputnik chandeliers and mirrored shards to bring the forward-looking focus to life. As guests entered the cocktail reception, they passed through a dim tunnel filled with haze and light streaks. "The journey was intended to project guests from current day into the future," said designer Rishi Patel. In the dining room, light was central to the decor. "Taking the concept of acceleration into a design perspective, we brainstormed what accelerates the fastest. For the gala, we used the acceleration of light, as it is one of the fastest-moving things in the world," Patel said. "Every fixture highlighted the collective energy in the room and provided a beautiful futuristic canvas," Johnson said.

The evening's fund-raising total of more than $2.95 million was achieved with the help of underwriters to reduce event expenses. Additionally, the paddle-raising segment of the live auction alone raised close to $520,000, a record for the event.

HMR Designs used light as a central element of decor. At the entrance, mirrored shards illuminated in blue stood before a dark tunnel that led guests to the cocktail reception.

'During dinner, planes of light and hand-tied wire patterns that projected light striae ... visually transported guests into a future periphery,' Patel said.
